Hiring the right teacher doesn't have to be challenging if it's done with calculated care. In fact, it can be most rewarding and can be as simple as knowing your ABCs - Applications, Behavior-based interview, Conversation . . . .


Part of being an early childhood leader is filling vacant teaching positions. For some, it happens more often than desired, but the fact remains that selecting the right teacher is critical for your center. The parents, children, and staff depend on your ability as a leader to select the right person.

We cannot always predict when an opening is going to occur, but we can prepare ourselves so that when it does happen, we know what steps to take. In other words, you can never sit back and get too comfortable when it comes to retaining a fully staffed center. Life involves change and certainly a child care center is no exception.

Once you receive a candidate's resume or application (whichever applies) it is important that you review it carefully. There are minimum requirements for each state's regulations, but coupled with that are the requirements set by you and your center.
