Great Expectations: Parents’ Beliefs About Child Care

Parents depend on reliable, affordable child care so that they can work to support their families. Nearly 12 million children under the age of 5 are in some kind of child care setting �" two-thirds of them in formal care �" every week. To better understand just what parents consider when looking for child care, the National Association of Child Care Resource & Referral Agencies (NACCRRA) conducted a nationwide parent poll. Surveyed parents were asked about their perceptions on a range of child care issues, including: their thoughts on minimum requirements for child care providers; their support of funding for quality care; the kind of care they use, including family, friends, or neighbors to care for their children; and if they juggled work hours to avoid using child care.

NACCRRA’s poll, conducted in February 2006, represents 592 parents nationwide who have at least one child under age 6. Responses to the poll have an overall margin of error of plus-or-minus 4 percent. Respondents to the poll are representative of the overall population of parents of young children, based on geography and key demographic criteria.
