- Situation -

We were on vacation last summer when we stopped at a family-run store in a rural part of our state. The store was officially closed; but since we were from so far away, they opened for us. They were the kindest family and even invited us to stay for dinner.

My husband, our two youngsters (ages five and eight), and I had a great visit. What really impressed me were the children in this family. They had two teenage daughters and three elementary-aged sons. All of the children were incredibly helpful. The boys loaded our car with the sacks of grains and other items we chose; the older daughters played with our children and handled the transaction at the cash register.

When we went inside, one older girl began folding laundry and another began to set the table while we watched the boys unloading a truckload of store supplies in the front yard. Never once did I hear either parent request the children to do these things. There was no squabbling and not a single complaint. How ever did they achieve that kind of cooperation?
