With hundreds of titles to choose from, selecting good computer software for young children can be a challenging task. The most basic aim in selecting software for children is that it promote the child's learning and personal growth. Second, it must attract and hold the child's interest so that he can benefit from whatever the software has to offer. And, third, it must be safe for the child to use and not expose the child to damaging or inappropriate material. It is to these three broad aims that we will devote our attention.

The learning of young children is defined not just in terms of content: the concepts and skills appropriate for a given age or stage of development. It is also defined in terms of the context for learning: the type of activity, the amount of creative input required, and connections to the world around them. Good software for young children should take into account both aspects of content. A good range of software for young children should ideally include content from many domains of children's learning - language arts, mathematics, science, social learning, visual arts, music, and motor development.
