Docia Shares a Story: "Are We There Yet?"

How do we know when we've arrived at our destination or when it's time to think about changes? My experience in elevators at conferences has given me some insights into this question.

At a conference, the best way to see people one might otherwise miss is to ride the elevators! At a conference in Austin, Texas, I found myself in an elevator with a friend I hadn't seen in years. The elevator was filled to capacity, so all we were able to do was exchange "hello's" and room numbers so we could meet later.

My friend had her little girl with her. Each time the elevator stopped, Cindy would ask, "Is it yet, mom-my?" Each time her mother would answer, "No, not yet, honey." When we reached the eighth floor and Cindy asked her usual question, her mother said, "Yes, this is it."

Taking her mother's hand, Cindy bounded out of the elevator, turned, waved at us, and smiled. We returned the wave and the smile and also found ourselves smiling at one another as though together we were sharing Cindy's happiness at having arrived at her "yet."
