In part one of this series on Web Site Development and Design (Exchange, November/December 2006), we introduced some basic terms and simple tools, and we offered a few helpful tips to get you started on developing a Web site for your program. In part two, we introduce more essential tech terms and identify some powerful tech tools you can use to produce a program Web site that is content rich, attractive, and effective �" a Web site your parents and staff will want to visit again and again.


Tech Terms

• Connectivity: The ability to link with a Web server.

• Upload: To copy a file from your own computer to a Web server.

• Download: To copy a file from a Web server to your own computer.

• Web Authoring Tool: Software used to generate HTML coding for Web pages in a word processing or desktop publishing format. Popular Web authoring programs include Adobe® GoLive®, Macromedia® Dreamweaver® (acquired by Adobe® Systems, Inc.), Microsoft® Expression® Web Designer (replaced Microsoft® FrontPage®), and NetObjects Fusion®.

• WYSIWYG: What you see is what you get.

• CSS: Short for Cascading Style Sheets. The ability to control the style and layout of multiple Web pages all at once.
