Cindy, Jani’s mother, strokes the knot that is visible on Jani’s forehead. She says to her husband, “I wonder when that is going to go away. It’s been three years since she fell.” The knot on Jani’s forehead, far smaller than it was when the accident occurred, is a constant reminder of an accident that resulted in a ride in an ambulance. The McGraws were on a weekend getaway. The family stopped at a bookstore to cool off. As Cindy was preparing to pick Jani up out of the stroller Jani suddenly stood up, tripped, and fell out of the stroller, hitting the left side of her forehead on the concrete floor. Cindy recalls the sound. She says, “Time slowed and everything happened in slow motion. I tried, but I didn’t catch her.” Suddenly, time began to move very fast. Cindy had Jani in her arms and she was running to the cashier to call an ambulance. Jani’s forehead swelled to the size of a baseball. Someone handed Cindy a bag of ice.
