Culture can be understood as the ever-changing values, traditions, social and political relationships, and world-view shared by a group of people bound together by a combination of factors that can include a common history, geographic location, language, social class, and/or religion. (Nieto, 1992, p. 111)

Asian Americans come from many different, distinct cultural groups - each with its own rich and unique defining features that are products of its history. It is of great importance that when we think of Asians and Asian Americans we are keenly aware of the fact that they represent many different cultural groups. Looking at a world map, we can see that a large number of nations are included in the territory of Asia. We cannot but reflect and wonder about the complexity of each of these nations and the diverse cultural heritage that is constantly being shaped and reshaped through a history of social and political changes.

How can I, or anyone, out of respect for cultural diversity, do justice to all the Asian cultures by trying to describe them in a short article? Can I, or anyone, do this and be true to the myriad of cultural realities? ...
