For children’s books about mathematical principles and theories and ways of teaching and learning math, I would direct patrons in my library to the 510 shelf in the Dewey Decimal System. For books about the real-life use of mathematics, the importance of numbers in human experience, and how math just plain gets us through our lives, there are many wonderful titles in the picture book section of your public library. Here are a few new ones.

Math is … Time. 

What can happen in a second? The world can shift, that’s what. The World in a ­Second is a fascinating look at what might be going on in 23 places around the world in different time zones at 8:32 a.m. EST. An earthquake begins in Venezuela, a man sits down for a short rest in Tokyo, a wave hits the shore in South Africa, and a ripe orange falls from a tree in Portugal. There is always something happening somewhere in the world — including right this second!
