Staff Children Enrolled in the Program

Our discussion of this topic started last March when an infant room supervisor who was expecting a baby and planned to return to work with her child asked for people's advice and experiences in caring for their own child as well as others in an infant room.

In the July issue, we heard from someone who had done just that and had an overwhelmingly positive experience. She admitted, though, that it took much sensitive discussion and planning with the other staff, the administration, and the parents.

At this point, the discussion shifted from the caring for one's own child in an infant/toddler program to having staff children in other rooms in the center.

We heard about a negative experience from a teacher who accepted a new job as a toddler supervisor and had her child in an older classroom in the same center. She became very uncomfortable with her son's teacher and the way the teacher handled discipline.

After numerous attempts to discuss this with her director, who made light of her concerns, the toddler teacher quit. She felt she couldn't support a program that condoned what she felt was inappropriate behavior management. She found a different job and ...
