Everyone agrees that to provide good care for infants and toddlers you need to have a good relationship with parents. There are, however, several ideas about what a good relationship is. I've often heard child care providers joking, "This job would be so easy if it weren't for the parents!"

Developing a collaborative relationship means a mutually respectful relationship in which each person is regarded as an equal and has ongoing input regarding the care of the child. This does not happen by itself. It requires planning, excellent communication, and a philosophical commitment on the part of the child care professional. It takes time and sensitivity to build rapport.

There is a shift of emphasis. Instead of saying to parents (in so many words), "Here is how we do things and this is what we need you to do to fit in," you say to parents, "You are the expert about your child, we know about child development and caring for children in groups. Together we can make this a great experience for your child." It's not the same as "the customer is always right," but the customer is always respected and listened to.
