1997 Immunization Schedule

The new national immunization schedule for the period from January through December 1997 (see page 80) reflects the changes described in last month's "Ask Dr. Sue" column. This schedule with its footnotes is the current standard for all children in the United States. Use it to be sure all children in group care are protected against vaccine-preventable disease on time.

New Handbook from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The CDC has published a new handbook called "The ABC's of Safe and Healthy Child Care: A Handbook for Providers." Health departments have been given camera-ready copies of the handbook to duplicate and disseminate as their resources permit.

A large portion of the handbook consists of Fact Sheets for a particular condition or symptom a child might have in a child care setting. Also, the text includes a very useful table of recommended immunizations for child care providers. However, some parts of the handbook are less helpful.

Early childhood professionals should test the recommendations against their experience and the recommendations in Caring for Our Children, the national health and safety performance standards published by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Public Health Association.
