There is no question that driving a dozen or more children in a school bus is probably the riskiest thing that a ­preschool owner can do. If it is so risky, why would you want to transport ­children? The answer is to serve the needs of working parents in your community, expand your attendance, and grow your business.

• Do you have an empty classroom or two at your school?
• Does your enrollment drop off in the summer?
• Do you lose preschool enrollments to schools that can serve school-age ­siblings?

If so, you have good reasons to offer before- and after-school care. A good school-age program can build your overall enrollment, as well as boost enrollment during school holidays and summers.

Unfortunately, you cannot serve the before- and after-school market unless the children can get to your school. Unless your school is next door to an elementary school or the elementary school bus will drop the children at your location, you will need to provide transportation.
