Another Training Tip: Modeling Education Theory for Staff

Directors seeking to train staff in child care programs are faced with limited training time and money. Seeing a demonstration of early childhood education theory in action with children is one of the most effective training mediums we can use. However, this is more complicated than it may sound.

Unless staff are specifically looking for role models, it may not occur to them to carefully watch what the director does with children. The director's presence in the classroom is most often viewed as a chance to pass on information or raise questions about a recent memo, substitute teachers, or a parent concern. If teachers are to learn from a director's modeling when in their classrooms, it's best to specifically designate when you are visiting for training purposes.

Several factors make classroom training visits successful:

_ having an agreed upon time for the training visit;

_ focusing the training on sharing observations about the children's, rather than the teacher's, behaviors and activities;

_ demonstrating examples of appropriate interventions to extend a child's play with additional materials or to assist with problem solving;

_ developing teacher observation skills so as to learn from the director's modeling as well as to better understand and ...
