Michelle and Eric looked forward to the in-service training. The week-long workshop lived up to its promise to provide insight into child behavior management; new activities for the entire center; and creative ways to group children effectively. The two teachers returned renewed and ready to try some of their newly learned ideas and techniques. They were especially interested in setting up some of the language-based small group activities, but these required additional materials, lower child-adult ratios, and teacher planning time. None of these resources was available.


Frances was a "fixture" at the local Head Start program. Her first involvement was as a parent participant. After volunteering in the classroom for four years, she was hired as a classroom assistant. Through dedication and hard work, she gained confidence and courage to approach her director about supporting her efforts to complete her GED and then earn a college degree. Frances did well in all of her college classes, but she especially loved the ones related to children's literature. One day she approached the educational coordinator and asked if the program could invest in some updated children's books and related material; she was told there were no resources in the budget for such items.
