For seven years Child Care Information Exchange has published "The Exchange Top 50," annual lists of the nation's largest child care organizations and facilities. On page 19 of this issue you will find a list of the nation's 50 largest child care facilities. These lists often cause readers to inquire whether it is possible to provide quality child care services in a large single center or in a multi-center operation.

In response to these inquiries, we have asked James Strickland to give his insights on the impact of center size on quality of care and center management. Jim has a unique perspective on this issue, having managed with his wife, Barbara, a single center serving 35 children as well as having administered for 20+ years a multi-center child care agency serving over 1000 children. In addition, as one of the nation's foremost authorities on risk management in child care, he has inspected and consulted in over 250 child care centers of all types and sizes throughout the nation.
