At the age of 55, armed with a post-graduate degree in Environmental Engineering from the United States, and 16 years of experience, I entered the field of education. I began to search for a scientific system to educate over 2,000 students of St. John's School, which I had acquired primarily as an investment. I found many educational theories, and administrative concepts appropriate for the western institutions but not one suitable for India, particularly in Mumbai, where typically a building houses three schools: the Pre-School, the Primary School, and the Secondary School. The schools generally operate in shifts. The staff of these schools is often dependent on each other for sharing space and other resources. Further, the end product of the Pre-school is the raw material for the Primary School and, similarly the end product of the Primary School is the raw material for the Secondary School.Consistent with human nature, the Primary School staff frequently complains about the raw material received from the Pre-School and the Secondary School staff holds the Primary School responsible for the quality of the poor raw material. Absence of appropriate coordination and lack of communication, shared expectations, and goals often leads to inadequate quality of education.
