Operating a non profit center is like trying to empty a lake with a teaspoon-you see the huge job that needs to be done, but you just don't have the resources to do it. - a non profit center directorIn taking a look at the non profit sector of the child care world, we see more than 30,000 centers providing valuable child care services for America's children. On the other hand, we see many of these centers struggling to survive, failing to meet even greater needs.
We also see tremendous diversity. We see glitzy suburban centers operated in pristine business parks as well as dingy urban centers operated out of store fronts. We see centers operated by churches, YMCAs, colleges, employers, public schools, social service agencies, and the Defense Department.
There is no typical non profit child care center. But non profit centers do face some common threats and some common opportunities. Based on our survey of 100 of the largest non profit organizations, here are the key trends in the non profit sector:
