Whether it is a flood, tornado, fire, hurricane, or earthquake, people respond to what is happening in a variety of ways. Young children who experienced the recent rocking, rolling, shaking earthquake and aftershocks in southern California let us know through their behavior how stressful and traumatic it had been.In children's centers where emergency plans were in place, staffs were able to respond quickly and appropriately to children who needed attention and reassurance.
One activity that proved to be particularly helpful was giving children the opportunity to draw pictures and dictate stories about the earthquake they could share with children in their group. It gave them the opportunity to express and work through some of their fear, anxiety, and feelings of helplessness.
