Proud Young Authors
November 7, 2019
The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.
-Helen Keller

Margie Carter reported recently on a gathering that she and her co-author, Ann Pelo attended with various authors who have contributed to the ROW (Reimagining Our Work) Collection that is published by Exchange Press. She writes: “Ann and I have just returned from a thrilling celebration of three of our ROW books in San Francisco. Ann and I were joined for an afternoon conversation with the authors by three of the contributors to From Teaching to Thinking, Shaquam Edwards, Nadiyah Taylor and Eliana Elias which was attended by coaches and directors who work with the City’s broad First Five PreSchool for All program.

Then the caterers arrived, food and drinks spread out and children, families, and co-workers of Nadia and Bethica and Rosalina’s programs arrived, along with their personal family members, for a festive few hours of savoring the books, hearing from the authors, and book signing which the children fully participated in.” (Note that Nadia Jaboneta is author of You Can’t Celebrate That! and Bethica Quinn and Rosalina Rodriguez are the authors of Treasures in the Thicket, which, at the end of the book, includes a lovely illustrated book created by the children).

Margie goes on to explain how the children reacted to the event: “Though they are now two years out from this experience, they threw themselves back into it with glee. Seeing the look on these young faces to find their drawings, words, and photos in a published book was the highlight of the event for all of us. Lela, whose story and drawing opens Treasures, calmly approached the book table saying, ‘I’m ready to sign books now. Where should I be?’”
