“Teacher, Teacher, it’s my story day! Write down my story, I’m ready.”

I take the classroom notebook, get a pencil, and lead him to a quiet place in the classroom where he can tell his story.

“Okay, my friend, how does your story begin? I am ready to write your words.”

Dexter’s Story (Dexter = butterfly)

Once upon a time there was a butterfly and it flew away. It went to its home. It went on the grass. It went and did things and then flew to the boy’s home. It is going to take the boy’s toys. Gonna eat them all up. The boy is sad and cries. The butterfly is not going to do it again. The end.

After taking Dexter’s story, I re-read it to him to make certain I had gotten all his words correct, and then we underlined the characters. I asked Dexter which character he wanted to play, and he said he wanted to be the butterfly. I asked him what he thought of his story and he grinned and said, “I like it.”
