One of our all-time favorite read-alouds was Gahan Wilson’s The Bang Bang Family (now unfortunately out of print). Wilson, the manic New Yorker cartoonist, pulled out all the stops in this story of a high-decibel family of extreme extroverts bang-banging its way through an ordinary noisy day – and the quiet mouse who breathes a sigh of relief when the uproar is done. Reading the book together in loud bang-banging voices was great cathartic fun.

Todd Parr works his usual magic in Be Who You Are. His cheerfully illustrated books are all about self-esteem, and about treasuring and respecting what makes each of us unique, whether we’re extroverts, introverts or somewhere in between. His message is simple: Be Silly. Be Brave. Try New Things. Be Your Best. Be Confident. And most of all: Love Yourself.
