We live in divided times. We wake up each day in an increasingly frenetic, technology-focused world. It’s hard not to be inundated and frankly overwhelmed by all of the madness that seems to be going on across the globe. We are subjected to endless notifications, guerrilla marketing, 24-hour news cycles and have access to a constantly growing number of platforms via which people can reach us through direct messaging. Anymore, it takes an incredibly proactive effort to slow down, disconnect, and spend time engaged in our immediate surroundings and communities.

I often catch myself feeling bleak about the state of the world. We hear about, and see, all of the details of gruesome acts of terror, we see families being split as they desperately flee for a safer life, and we see natural disasters that destroy entire cities and regions, leaving communities helpless and homeless. At times, I feel insignificant. I feel that I am not doing enough. Given all of the chaos around the world, am I dedicating enough of myself to making the world a better place? This cycle often leads to a paralysis that leaves me asking myself why I am not doing more, giving more, fighting more.
