As crime presents a major concern for all Americans, those responsible for child care center management must ask themselves if their center is "crime proof." The answer is simply no. It is impossible to make anything totally safe from crime. Still, you can greatly reduce your facility's chances of becoming a crime statistic by taking some steps to protect your center. This article deals with two specific forms of crime - burglary and vandalism - and it identifies specific steps that can be taken to reduce the chances of crime.


Risk management professionals think of risks (regardless of whether it is crime, employee injuries, fire, etc.) in three active ways:

Loss prevention, the step taken before a loss or crime occurs, is the preferred method as it focuses on stopping a crime.

Loss control is used after a loss occurs, but is designed to keep the loss from growing. Having a sprinkler system in a building is an example.

Risk financing is the process of paying for a loss once it has occurred. Buying insurance or not buying insurance and paying for a loss yourself are two primary examples.
