What is Love?

There was much excitement at the Lincoln Child Development Center in Santa Monica, California, when Marsha Gutsch told her group of four year olds that she and her boyfriend Don were going to be married and that the children were invited to the wedding.

Dramatic play immediately centered on weddings and for weeks became the main activity. The children made elaborate settings, assumed different roles, and vied over who would be the bride and who would be the groom. Marsha found herself having to answer countless questions. When they asked her why she was going to get married she told them, “Because Don and I love each other.” (Marsha’s answer brought much giggling and nudging.) This raised the question, “What is love?”

Here’s a sample of what the children said:

Your heart stops beating and your bones get weak. (Dana)
I can’t tell you because it takes eight hours to tell. (Augustine)
You go to one of these weddings with three dollars and get a wife. (Monica)
