At a Saturday conference a few weeks ago, participants from community agencies came together to discuss how they can best serve children and parents during this time of unrest, concern, worry, and anxiety about terrorism, war, weapons of mass destruction, snipers, stock market scandals, fires, floods, droughts, tornados, and how important it is that services, when needed, be available and of quality.

At the close of the Revolutionary War in 1776, the British marched to the surrender field to a popular tune of the day The World Turned Upside Down. The words were:

If buttercups buzzed after the bee
If boats were on land, churches at sea
If ponies rode mice and if grass ate the cows
If cats were chased into holes by the mouse
If summers were spring and the other way round
Then all the world would be upside down.

Our world may seem to be upside down, but young children in their inimitable way, continue to keep our spirits up instead of down. The following story was told to me by a wonderful early childhood educator, Mary Wehbi, who said that as she thought back over 35 years in early childhood education, certain children came into focus.
