In the last issue of Exchange, I wrote about the significance of children’s play spaces, why they matter and the impact they can have on our children and on our communities. In part two, I want to speak to the lessons I have learned as a designer and as an advocate for play. These are not meant to be a set of guidelines or rules; rather, they are meant to be points of consideration or things to remember during the design process. While much of this is from a design perspective, these lessons are applicable to anyone who is involved in the development of spaces, programs and new ideas.
Over the past ten years, I have worked in a multitude of settings, project types, geographic locations and teams. I have picked up a diverse series of methodologies and considerations that have made me a better designer, facilitator, leader and teammate. What I have found over time is that these points have led to more meaningful and successful projects.
