Children’s Reading Tents: Building a Reading Culture in Uganda

Since 2010 Children International in Uganda has held seven Community Children’s Reading Tents within the peri-urban poor communities of Kampala; reaching out to over 35,000 children from Katanga, Makererer Kivulu, Nakulabye Kiwunya, Makerere Kikoni, and Kajabula-Bwaise communities. The Community Reading Tent provides an opportunity for children, teachers, and parents to celebrate the importance of reading for children in a resource-constrained environment. It offers numerous activities that stimulate the children’s ability to read voluntarily in order to develop a reading culture amongst them.

Children International in Uganda, established in 2007 as a local registered non-governmental organization (NGO), is located on Tufnell Drive, Plot 24 Kamwokya. It is affiliated with Children International (CI), the nonprofit humanitarian organization founded in 1936 and based in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. Our mission is to bring real, lasting change to children living in poverty. In partnership with contributors, we reduce their daily struggles, invest in their potential, and provide them with the opportunity to grow up healthy, educated, and prepared to succeed and contribute to society.
