I was thrilled to take on the position as elementary school principal at Edward “Babe” Gomez Heritage School. It was my first administrative role and it came ripe with opportunities to advocate for children, which was always my passion. Gomez Heritage, part of the Omaha Public Schools system, had both strong Early Childhood (Pre-Kindergarten) and Dual-Language Programs, so I was excited to work �" especially on behalf of those two populations. Opportunities to find support and resources for my school became my top priority.

Two things have happened since the Gomez Heritage school community ­welcomed me in 2007 that have greatly influenced our journey, leading us to advocate beyond our students to ­children everywhere. The first was the development of an outdoor classroom. That launching point came surprisingly and quickly during my first year. The Early Childhood Supervisor for Omaha Public Schools asked me to consider ­creating an outdoor classroom so our youngest students could have daily access to nature. She was aware of an innovative new Nebraska Department of Education pilot project to support the creation of Nature Explore Outdoor Classrooms in early childhood programs and elementary schools.
